Book Review of Alex Award Winner: Soulless by Gail Carriger
Alexia Tarabotti doesn’t fit in polite Victorian society. Maybe it’s because of her Italian father, her swarthy looks, or her spinster status. In addition, Alexia is soulless, a rare, secret even in 19th-century London where werewolves, vampire hives, and ghosts are accepted in society and government. The Scottish Alpha werewolf, Lord Conall Macon, is the only person that notices and appreciates Alexia’s looks and intelligence. Of course this puts them at odds as Lord Macon finds her both exasperating and enticing. After Alexia kills a rogue vampire with her parasol at a society function, she and Lord Macon reluctantly team up to solve the supernatural mystery. Secondary characters, especially Lord Akeldama, Alexia’s gay best vampire friend, make the story even more appealing. Soulless seem to combine the best elements of the steampunk, mystery, and romance genres. It feels like you are reading The Time Machine, a Sherlock Holmes mystery, and Twilight all at once. Winner of the Alex Award, Soulless is a witty, satire the will interest a wide cross section of readers.
